Tatting

By Claire Webster

I learnt to tat when I was quite young. Amazingly, my father taught me. He was a consultant in tropical agriculture and so spent a lot of time away from home and this hobby kept him out of mischief.

So, there he was - his hands rough from working in the fields - handling the fine shuttle with remarkable sensitivity.

You don't need much to get started, a ball of fine thread and a tatting shuttle (the ones with a crochet hook at one end are really handy). There is only one knot to learn - it's effectively a clove hitch.

You work with two threads and the only difficulty in learning is to get the knot lying on the correct thread - that's a matter of adjusting your tension. I admit that it can be infuriating: if you go wrong it is extremely difficult to unpick. And, being fine, the work progresses somewhat slowly.

I completed a few projects before moving on to other crafts - I'm ashamed to admit that I actually charged my mother for the mat I made her. But then, my parents encouraged the entrepreneur in me...
